About Castel Sant’Angelo: tips and curiosities

Many buildings in Rome evolved through the years, changing their use and purpose. Just like Castel Sant’Angelo.
Since its construction it transformed not only its original structure, making it one of the most versatile monuments.

Tomb, fortress and prison

In 135 AD the emperor Hadrian commissioned a tomb for him and his family. Known as Mausoleum of Hadrian, it hosted also the ashes of next emperors like Marcus Aurelius and Commodus. Only in the VI century it got the actual name when, according to a legend, the Archangel Michael appeared on the top of the building.

Popes later converted it in a fortress, the safest in Rome. It was Pope Nicholas III who connected the castle to St. Peter’s Basilica with a corridor called Passetto di Borgo.
Because of its impenetrability, during the Papal State they also used it as prison. Here were imprisoned Benvenuto Cellini, Giordano Bruno, Beatrice Cenci and Cagliostro.

The Sack of Rome

Pope Alexander VI Borgia turned Castel Sant’Angelo into a military fortress, with high walls, a moat and weapons. These changes played an important role in 1527, during the Sack of Rome.
When the Landsknechts attacked the city, Pope Clemens VII could save himself seeking refuge into the fortress. He escaped using the Passetto, while 189 Swiss Guards died to protect him.
He spent seven months safe in the castle, with the college of Cardinals and all Romans he was able to save.

Popular movie set

An iconic city like Rome may often influence art, cinema and theatre.
In Giacomo Puccini’s Tosca, the last act takes place on the bastions of Castel S. Angelo.
Also Dan Brown chose it for Angels and Demons. In fact, both in the book and in the movie many scenes happen here – yes, they actually shot here!

But it’s not all: even many videogames took inspiration from the monument for their storyline. Perhaps some of you remember Assassin’s Creed II and Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood, where you could even climb the huge building.
